Outdoor gyms and outdoor exercise areas
There are already more than 40 outdoor gyms and roughly 60 smaller outdoor exercise areas in Helsinki. They are sports facilities that are open to everyone and free of charge, available to you year round and 24 hours a day.
The most common equipment in outdoor gyms are bench press and squat equipment, as well as upper and lower pulleys, for example. Waffa branded outdoor gym equipment intended especially for the elderly can be found in the outdoor gyms of Roihuvuori, Kalasatama and Vuosaari, for example. You can see the equipment and other details of each outdoor gym on the gym’s own page:

Remember gym etiquette in outdoor gyms too!
- Free the exercise area between sets
- Clean the equipment after use, pick up after yourself
- Use headphones to listen to music. If you train in a group or with a friend, let others train in peace
- Report equipment failures or broken equipment at palautteet.hel.fi/en
The outdoor gyms do not have winter maintenance, but they are available all year round. In severe frost, it’s a good idea to bring your own warm seat!
Outdoor gym equipment is suitable for everyone
The equipment is easy to use. Most equipment has pictures of the correct training posture, as well as a QR code that will give you more detailed instructions. The equipment can be adjusted with a portable weight pack, so outdoor gyms are well suited for different levels of exercisers. Maximum weights are up to 100 kilos. The functionality of the equipment can be extended with the help of elastic bands and other tools, for example. Feel free to try! You can do a longer workout, or stop by the outdoor gym when out for a walk or other outdoor activities.
We also organise free guided tours to outdoor gyms for the elderly and other interested parties. View the schedule (in Finnish)
New outdoor gyms are completed every year
Residents constantly wish for new outdoor gyms in, for example, the proposals of participatory budgeting, OmaStadi. New outdoor gyms are completed and the old ones renewed approximately 2–6 times a year.
Outdoor gym refers to a fitness venue with at least 8, up to a maximum of two dozen pieces of equipment. In addition, there are outdoor exercise areas of various sizes around the city, usually with about 3–8 pieces of equipment.
