Take the survey on the principles of a safe space
The City of Helsinki is creating shared principles for safer spaces for all indoor sports facilities with no existing principles. Customers and the staff are heard to find out what kind of interaction and behaviour we can use to make everyone in the indoor sports facilities of the City of Helsinki feel welcome.
In the context of a safer space, safety means the social dimension of safety, that is, people’s social attitudes and interaction with each other. The goal of the principles of a safe space is to make every person feel welcome regardless of their personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, functioning or language.
Thus, the principles do not mean general rules of order and they are not related to the condition or use of premises and equipment, for example.
The aim of the completed principles is to instruct all those who use indoor sports facilities and those who operate there to follow commonly agreed principles, and to create a positive atmosphere in the place.
The principles of a safe place were developed for Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall in 2023. Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall is known to be the first swimming hall in Finland for which the principles of a safe place have been established for customers. In addition, the principles have been drawn up in numerous Youth Work Units and the Central Library Oodi, for example.
The development of the principles of a safe place for indoor sports facilities has been started by interviewing people who regularly use three large sports facilities. A survey was prepared for customers, based on the themes related to safe space identified on the basis of the interviews.
With the survey, we outline how matters related to safer spaces are currently implemented at the City of Helsinki’s sports facilities and what else needs to be taken into account when preparing the principles.
The responses are completely anonymous. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The answers will be used to draft the principles for safer spaces.
The principles of a safe space will be completed in 2025
